For production of “Guldgris”, Norsvin Duroc boars are selected from the Norsvin Delta boar testing station. Every six weeks boars are exported to the Swedish semen station Hudaryd.
Norsvin uses up to date economics, heritabilities and genetic correlations between traits affecting quality and profitability in deriving customized selection indexes. Selection of Duroc boars for the Swedish market is mainly based on growth, meat percentage and robustness traits. New groups of selected boars are continuously increasing mean values on specific traits, as compared to the current status at Hudaryd semen station.
Norsvin Duroc is bred as a healthy, productive and lean sire line. Also, Norsvin has, together with the Norwegian meat packer Nortura, had a sustainable focus on meat quality in developing the Norsvin Duroc line. Norway has a producer owned pig breeding company and a pork industry mainly controlled by the farmers. This is an important fundament for the broad-spectrum genetic program.
With a 50 percent contribution to the “Guldgris” market hog, Norsvin Duroc promotes the unique product quality for the “Guldgris” range. In the breeding goal, meat quality is balanced with production traits. High-tech analysis methods, such as the Norsvin Delta CT-scan and newly developed, rapid methods for meat and fat quality evaluation are central in Norsvin’s genetic program. New innovations enable more effective and sustainable development in production as well as meat quality traits.
