The breeding goal of Norsvin Duroc aims at an efficient and lean slaughter pig with good meat quality.
Because of the CT scanner, the progress on lean meat percentage has been extremely high (about 1.0 unit annually). As a consequence, the breeding goal now pays more attention to growth and feed efficiency. In the future, we therefore predict increased progress on those traits.
Due to the extremely negative genetic correlations between slaughter quality and meat quality we could easily destroy the meat quality of Norsvin Duroc by increasing the leanness. Meat quality has therefore been – and will still be – an important part of the breeding goal.
